Trilogy New Wave

Synopsis

Trilogy: New Wave  follows three of the best surfers in the world: Griffin Colapinto, Seth Moniz, and Ethan Ewing on an epic eight-trip surf adventure. The three explore the world’s most sought after surf spots in a search for true happiness, while also competing against one another in the World Surf League (WSL). This film is an ode to the original Trilogy released in 2007, starring the late Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson, and Taj Burrow – who at the time were also some of the best surfers in the world. In the modern age there is so much pressure on young athletes to be the best. The film shows that although practice is important, having fun traveling with your friends and family can have a greater impact on your success.

Director's Statement

It’s always been a goal of mine to direct a feature length surf film. The medium all but disappeared in recent years and I thought that I might never get the opportunity, but the stars seemed to align for this one. I ran into Seth, Griffin, and Ethan on a tarmac in the middle of the Pacific. I was headed on a surf trip with some friends and the three of them were heading home after scoring perfect waves. We arrived to pumping surf and Seth walked up to me like he had known me for years and told me I needed to get out there. A couple months later, the footage of the three of them surfaced and everything became clear to me. This was the modern trilogy: today’s version of Andy, Taj, and Joel. I pitched the idea to my longtime mentor and friend Taylor Steele, and a couple weeks later we had funding from Billabong to go on the first trip.

I wanted to make something unique, unlike any other film I’d seen before. I wanted to combine old school surf montages with a narrative that kept the non-surfer interested. I feel like we accomplished that goal and I couldn’t be more excited to share the film with the world. The film was acquired by Utopia Distribution in late 2023 and will be released in the late summer of 2024.
