Pool Daze

Pool Daze chronicles some of the first ever days at the Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California. After producing the initial launch assets for the Surf Ranch unveiling, Aether Films was given the opportunity to come back and document the first days the site was opened to some of the world’s best professional surfers as well as Kelly Slater’s oldest friends. The short features: Kelly Slater, Carissa Moore, Kanoa Igarashi, Nat Young, Jack Johnson, Stephanie Gilmore, and Josh Kerr as they test the perfect man-made wave for the first time.

Director's Statement

I’ve been really lucky in my career to get the opportunity to work on some amazing projects. I think there is likely nothing more unique than the Surf Ranch. Getting to document the process from a small model in a warehouse to the unveiling of Kelly’s Wave was one of the most incredible and fulfilling experiences of my life. What was once a dream for Kelly, quickly became a reality on that fateful day in December of 2015.

About five months after the initial unveiling, we had the chance to go back to document some of the world’s best surfers on a three-day shoot. I wanted to create a short that encompassed that experience. There’s something very unique about surfing in a pool; it’s a more social experience than what most surfer’s are used to. It felt right to present the story linearly, showing how each day of the shoot took on a life of its own. The result was a ten-minute film that encapsulates a revolutionary time period in surfing.
